Back in May, we planted some tiny sunflower seeds. We gave them soil, water, and sunshine. They sprouted, started to grow. They became to big in the tubes they started in. So we placed the sunflowers in a wider area with plenty of room to grow. The soil is rich with nutrients. Plenty of water, we made sure of it. We took note of the changes. The sun shined its light on the plants, they grew even more. Once established we were able to see growth with not a lot of effort on our part. They sunflowers reached higher and higher. They grew taller than us. Now are starting to bloom. Soon those blooms will produce more seeds. Then we will have a whole new experience with our sunflowers. And to think it all started with a tiny seed. Some seeds did not make it. We are thankful for the ones that did. Not all the seeds grew to the same height, or at the same time. Some took longer, some are taller, but they are all sunflowers. They are all worth celebrating.

We love Books! They are so much a part of each and every day. Infants start by looking at the colors, images, and learning to turn the pages to discover what is next. Then comes recognition of the images on the pages. Being able to identify the pictures, actions, and symbols they see. Then comes the words, so many words. Being able to understand the words, repeating the words, predicting what will happen next in the story. Words to teach us about our interest. Words to help us understand our feels, actions, and the whole world around us. Books can be enjoyed over and over and over again. Every day we read aloud to the children, all the children. Sometimes they sit with me as I read. Sometimes I will just start reading a book while they are in gagged in other activities. They might come take a look to see what I am reading, or not. That’s OK. They might come to me with a book to read. Which I am happy to to do. Before nap time, I will read aloud. The children have to imagine the pictures in their mind. After I am done reading, I will put on a story CD. Again, they need to draw from their own minds the pictures to go along with the words.
Each and everyday at Dunn Right Home Daycare we are setting the ground work for these children to become successful young readers. Which turns into successful young adults. Just Like Dr. Seuss says... |
